Skills
Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this sheep applies these skills:
Math
Add in math concepts by having your child count how many seeds are on the watermelon. Let the child identify the color of the watermelon.
Science
If you have other crafts with your child, have them classify the watermelon along other craft. For example, watermelon falls under the fruit category where broccoli are vegetables.
Fine Motor Skills
Your child will be using pencil to trace the letter W template which involve eye hand coordination.
Additionally, your child will use a scissor to cut out the letter W.
Your child will use a Q-tips to make seeds on the watermelon which will improve their hand strength.
Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional
Children can use this watermelon and pretend to eat it during play time with their peers. They can pretend it taste sweet and delicious craving for real watermelon. Let just hope you have a cold one in the frig to satisfy their craving!
Boundaries
Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.
Materials
You will need a letter w template, red and green construction paper, markers, q-tips, black paint, scissors, and glue
Steps
Have your child use a pencil to trace the letter W template on the red construction paper.
Next, have your child carefully use a scissor to cut on the line to get the letter W.
Then you can have the child use a pencil to trace the letter W template on the green construction paper and cut out just the bottom portion of the letter W to resemble to skin.
Now, have the child glue the green construction paper onto the bottom of the letter W.
Finally, have the child use the q-tip, dip it in black paint, and make dots on the watermelon to resemble the seeds!
Let the paint dry and use it as a prop!
And you are done!
Modifications
Instead of using green and red construction paper, you can use white construction paper and have the child paint or color the watermelon.
Instead of using q-tips to make the seeds, you can use black markers for the seeds. To build upon the fine motor skills, have the child use a hole puncher and punch out black paper to create the seeds!
Spit Out Those Seeds!
We love to eat watermelon outside in the summer and make a mess with all those seeds and juice! Have you kids walk outside with their watermelon crafts and pretend to eat and spit out some seeds!
