Math

Add in math concepts by having your child identify the colors and shapes they are using to decorate their art.

Science

If you have other crafts with your child, have them classify the  horse along with the other crafts. For example,  horses fall under animals, where spiders are classified as insects.

Fine Motor Skills

Your child will use writing utensils such as pencils, markers, crayons, or colored pencils to decorate the craft. Depending on the child’s cutting skills, why not let them trace the heart template and cut it out. Have the child glue their pictures anywhere on the heart and draw items they are willing to climb to show their love and appreciation for their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, etc.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Children can use this art project and talk about how they feel about making this Mother’s Day craft. Not only that, why not question them about what their mom’s reactions would be. They can role play with you. You’ll be the mother acting all surprised when receiving the craft as you focus on their reactions to your response.

Steps

Firstly, find a heart template, trace it, and cut it out. Take into consideration how big you want the heart to be. If the child has the skills, have them do the first step with your supervision.

Take a picture of the child pretending to climb something. Make it simple and ask the child to pretend to climb a tree.

If necessary, model for the child. Believe it or not, they will giggle and think it is funny.

Next, ask the child, “What would you climb to show your love for your mom?” If the child does not have a mom replace it with someone else such as sister, aunt, grandma, etc.

Then have the child, draw the item they are willing to climb with your provided items such as crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.

Once the child finishes decorating, have them glue the picture of themselves climbing whatever they drew.

Don’t forget to ask the child the previous question and write the response on the heart with a marker.

Have the child polish the heart with more items to beautify it for the person they will be giving this to.

Modifications

You can use use white construction paper for the heart instead of red construction paper. Use a variety of materials to personalize the craft for that special someone. Add in some stickers, glitter, poms poms to make it unique!
