Use simple letter crafts like this kite to teach your kids about the letter K! Kites work because the wind pushes them around in the sky, and this is a great moment to teach your kids about the wind and science. Not only that, real kites are easy to get and will motivate kids to go outdoors, exercise, and have a great time!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JBE0co13AA

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this kite applies these skills:

Math

Ask your child to identify the shapes of the kite along with other shapes they may see. Diamond for kite or any other shapes that have been used to decorate the kite. Have your child count how many shapes they have all together.

Science

Ask the child if you can fly a kite indoors or outdoors? What causes a kite to fly? Wind causes a kite to fly. You can feel the kite and the wind in your hands. What causes a kite NOT to fly? It can be gravity, the kite is too heavy, or there is not enough wind.

Fine Motor Skills

Depending on the items being used, your child will use their fine motor skills to pick up the shapes and glue it on the kite.

Your child will use a tape and glue yarn on the back of the kite to represent the string.Your child can also tape another piece of yarn for the tails.

Depending on your child’s cutting skills, your child will cut out the diamond under your supervision. If not, cut it out for your child.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Your child can go outside, run and fly the kite. When the kite flies in the sky, it will cause your child to smile and feel happy. Your child will feel accomplished because the kite that has been created and decorated by them is up in the air.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

You will need the following items: construction paper, yarn, pre-cut shapes, markers, scissors, tape and glue.

Yarn, diamond template, letter K template, construction paper, and anything you want to decorate your kites with

Markers, scissors, tape, and glue

Steps

Depending on the child’s fine motor skills, have your child cut out the large diamond for the kite.

Using the pre-cut shapes, have your child decorate the kite.

Using the yarn, have your child tape one end of the yarn on the back middle part of the diamond.

If you are using the letter K, have your child glue the letter K on the diamond.

Lastly, let it completely dry and use it as a prop. Go outside, have fun and fly the kite.
