Here is an umbrella craft to teach your kids about the letter U. A simple craft that can be modify in any way. This craft will help with your child fine motor skills using their fingers to peel, stick, and glue stickers and yarns.

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this umbrella applies these skills:

Math

Have your child count how many items are on the umbrella.

Help your child identify the colors and shapes are on the umbrella.

Fine Motor Skills

Your child will use a use a scissor to cut out the umbrella and the umbrella stick.

They will also use a writing utensil to trace an umbrella and umbrella stick.

Your child will be using their fingers to glue yarn, peel and stick stickers, or any items you have provided for the craft.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Children can use this umbrella to pretend it is raining during play time. They talk about their feelings when it rain and how it feels having to use an umbrella during the rain.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

You will need the following items:

  • White and black construction paper
  • Umbrella template for the top and the stick
  • Yarn
  • Stickers, foams stickers
  • Pencil, markers, glue, scissor

Steps

Using the umbrella template, encourage the child to use a pencil to trace it on the white construction paper.

Have the child use scissors to cut out the umbrella and stick.

Next, have the child glue the stick to the the umbrella.

Flip the umbrella around right side.

Give the child a piece of yarn about 2 inches to glue on the umbrella to make an upper case U and lower case u. (Use a visual prompt or lightly draw on the umbrella the letter U.)

With the provided materials, have the child peel and stick the stickers to decorate the umbrella.

Be flexible and let child enjoy this craft to increase their fine motor skills!

Modifications

Use any items: stickers, foam stickers, glitter, tissue papers

Color, paint, sponge paint, dots dot the umbrella

Add in yarn and place raindrops on the end of the yarn!

Be creative and decorate the umbrella any color you like!
