T is for tomato! What else can it be? Use super simple tomato crafts like this one to teach your kids the letter T! You’ll be surprised how your child will react! Tomatoes fall under a Fruits and Veggies theme and are very healthy. But is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? Sing some songs about tomatoes while your kids are making them!

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this tomato applies these skills:

Math

There is not much math, but you can have your child draw in seeds. Afterwards, you can ask how many seeds are there altogether. Or you can have your child identify the colors and shapes a tomato can be.

Science

Ask the student if tomatoes are a fruit or vegetable. Label the parts of a tomato: stem, skin, seeds, and flesh. This is a great way to introduce new vocabulary to young students. Imagine your child labeling and telling you which part of the tomato is edible and not? Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Fine Motor Skills

Using a circle template, either you or your child can trace it. Depending on your child’s cutting skills, you or your child can cut out the circle. Make sure to supervise your child when using sharp items.

Your child will use the red Do-A-Dot marker to fill in the circle. From there, use the green Do-A-Dot marker for the letter T to represent the stem.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Your child can pretend to eat the tomato and tell you how it tastes; if it is sweet, sour, bitter, delicious, and so on. Have your child to pretend and cut the tomato to turn it into spaghetti sauce. You’ll be amazed to see and hear them using their imagination to make you some spaghetti.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

You will need the following items: letter T template, a circle template, white construction paper, Do-A-Dot marker, glitter and glue.

Paper plate, letter T template, and glitter

Scissors, pencil, glue, markers, and do-a-dot markers

Steps

Depending on the child’s fine motor skills, have the child trace the circle template onto a white construction paper and cut it out.

Trace the letter T template onto a white construction paper and cut it out to represent the stem.

Use the green Do-A-Dot marker for the letter T. Use the red Do-A-Dot marker for the circle.

Have the child glue the letter T (stem) on the back of the tomato making sure to have both red and green colors showing on the same side.

Finally, place some glue around the tomato and have the child sprinkle some glitter on it to give it a 3-D effect.

Modifications

Instead of using the Do-A-Dot Markers, you can replace it with a marker, colored pencils, or crayons. Give it more of a 3-D effect by using tissue papers or cut up construction papers for the tomato and the stem.

You can also have the child paint the tomato with a paintbrush, their fingers, or sponges to create a different effect.

This will give the child an opportunity to explore sensory skills.
