Crafts for Kids: Seasons of the Year!

by Nov 23, 2019Crafts, Learn About the World

Teach your kids about the seasons of the year with nifty crafts that show it all on one page. This craft is especially great because it ties in a lot of other concepts you have been teaching your children throughout the year, such as months, numbers, sun, snow, hot, cold, patterns, etc. Don’t forget to play some music about the seasons of the year while you’re making this craft!

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this craft applies these skills:

Math

Add in math concepts by having your child count how many colors they used to decorate their trees. Have the child compare and contrast the colors used for each season. Sort the tissue paper by colors. Challenge your child to count how many leaves are on each tree.

Science

Talk with the child about the four different seasons and how seasons change throughout the year. Each season lasts approximately four months.

Fine Motor Skills

Your child will learn how to use their pincer grasp to crumble the tissue papers and glue it on the tree template. You can challenge your child to cut the tissue paper into small squares. Have your child trace the season’s words: Spring, Winter, Fall, and Summer.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Children can use this art project to share with the class the seasons they like the most and why? Have the children talk about which season they don’t like and why?

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

You will use green, light green, yellow, orange, red, and white tissue papers. You will need brown and blue construction paper, pencil, marker, scissors, and glue.

Blue construction paper, various colored tissue paper, and a tree template

Scissors and glue

Steps

Firstly, find a tree template, trace it on brown construction paper and cut it out. You can also make your own just like the one we did.

Next, pre-cut the tissue papers into 1 inch squares or have the child do it depending on his/her cutting skills. Please supervise the child when using sharp objects.

Fold the blue construction paper into four squares. Have the child glue one tree template in each square.

Then, have the child sort and crumble the pre-cut tissue paper by color. Once sorting and crumbling is done, have the child glue the tissue paper using the correct colors in each of the seasons. Make sure the color matches with the season the child is placing it into.

Lastly, have the child trace or write the season’s name in the appropriate square and you are ready to have a conversation with the students.

Modifications

You can use markers, paints, tissue paper construction paper, or anything to decorate the tree.

You can use the dipping dots markers to create the leaves on the tree instead of tissue paper to decorate. (This may save you some time!)

Be creative and make it fun!
