Here is a super simple night craft that teaches your kids about the letter N. It works beautifully into science subject where you can explain to your child about night and day.

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how the night applies these skills:

Math

You can improve the child’s skills in counting and adding by asking the following questions:

  • How many stars do you have altogether?
  • If I give you two more stars, how many stars will you now have?
  • What shape is your star? (This is questionable and will make the child give you a funny look!)

Science

This is a great opportunity to talk about the earth’s rotation and revolution. And how the earth spins which creates daytime and night time. What do the children see during the day time? Night time? What causes day and night? And how the earth is always spinning.

Fine Motor Skills

The child will use their hand eye coordination to trace and cut the letter N.

Increase their skills in picking up the tiny stars and gluing it onto the letter N.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Sing the song “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” . Children can pretend to make different sounds for day time and for night time. They can pretend to be sleepy, start yawning, and sleep during playtime.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

You will use black and yellow construction paper, glue, scissor, and star hole puncher and/or a Cricut machine

Steps

First, give the child the letter N template and have the child trace it on the black construction paper and cut it out with an adult’s supervision.

Next, give the child the yellow construction paper and allow the child to use the hole puncher to punch out the stars to strengthen their fingers and increase their fine motor skills.

Then, have the child use the glue to paste the stars onto the letter N.

Lastly, ask math questions that are appropriate to the child’s age. For example, how many starts do they have?

Modifications

Depending on the child’s cutting skills, you can trace and/or cut out the letter N. Motivate and entice the child to do it independently.

You can use star stickers instead of a hole puncher which also works great for the student’s fine motor skills. They will need to peel the stickers and stick them on the letter N.

To challenge the child, provide chalk and have the child draw stars on the letter N.
