Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this bird sitting in a nest applies these skills:

Math

Add in math concepts by having your child count how many shredded papers they used for the nest  , or having them count as they used the dipping dots to decorate their bird.

Science

If you have other crafts with your child, have them classify the  bird along with the other crafts. For example,  birds fall under animals, where ants are classified as insects.

Fine Motor Skills

Colorful bird!Your child will learn how to use their pincer grasp to glue the shredded papers to make a nest and place the eye(s) on the bird.Additionally, they will use their hand to hold the do-a-dot markers to stamp on the bird.

Lastly, your child will use their pincer grasp to put the yarn together to create the tail. If you use googly eyes or sticker eyes, this will also allow them to improve their pincer grasp skills.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Children can use this  bird as part of their farm and pretend to be a bird flying in around the classroom chirping away happily.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

You will use white, yellow, and brown construction papers, do-a-dot markers, capital and lower case letter N template, googly eyes, scissors, and glue.

Steps

Firstly, find yourself a cute bird template. You can find one online by typing in “bird template” in the search box.

Next, draw a circle on the brown construction paper and cut it in half to create the nest. Keep in mind the size of the bird to the size of the nest.

Once you have your bird template already cut out, the child will decorate the bird using the Do-A-Dot Markers and glue the googly eye on it. Instead of using Do-A-Dots Markers, you can have your child color or paint the bird. You can also use sticker eyes or have your child draw on the bird.

Then have the child glue shredded brown paper onto the nest to create a 3-D effect and glue on the letters N on top of it.

Once the bird is dried, have your child glue the bird behind the nest depending on how he/she wants it to be..

Lastly, let it dry and your bird sitting in the nest waiting to be hung on the wall.

Modifications

You can use googly eyes or sticker eyes instead of having the child draw them.

Also, you can replace yarn with strings or balloon ribbon.
