Use this ice cream craft to help kids learn about the letter I. Ice cream is yummy and sweet and every kid loves ice cream. Don’t you? Teaching the child on how water can turn into ice is an excellent example to promote science.

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this sheep applies these skills:

Math

Using dots to create sprinkles will allow you to ask how many sprinkles are on the ice cream. Depending on the amount of scoops gives you an opportunity to ask how many scoops of ice cream are on the ice cream cone. You can have the child identify different shapes and how many shapes are used to make the ice cream.

Science

Take the opportunity to ask the child how ice are created and what happens to the ice when it melts. How does water turn into ice? How does ice turn into water? You can teach new vocabulary words such as solid and liquid.

Fine Motor Skills

Your child will trace the letter I, a circle, and triangle using a template. Your child will use a scissor to cut out a circle, triangle, and the letter I. Using tissue papers as sprinkles is a great way to work on hand-eye coordination. Crumbling the tissue papers into a ball is small and needs small movements to grasp them, pick them up, and move them to create sprinkles.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Children can pretend to be the ice cream man, selling an eating ice cream. They can enjoy making and eating their favorite ice cream. It tastes super delicious!

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

For this craft, you will need the following items: a circle template, a triangle template, an I template, brown, yellow, pink, and blue construction paper. You will need glue, tissue papers, glitter, and stickers if you choose to add sprinkles.

Steps

First, find yourself a circle, triangle, and letter I template. Have the child trace a circle on a pink construction paper to create the ice cream. Have the child use the triangle template and trace it on the brown construction paper for the cone. And have the child use the letter I template and trace it on the yellow construction paper. Once all of the tracing has been completed, with adult supervision, give the child a scissor to cut out the triangle, circle, and letter I. This is a great way for the child to use their fine motor skills to improve their cutting and writing skills. It will allows the child to use their hand-eyes coordination as well.

Next, using the half sheet of blue construction paper, have the child glue the letter I on the left side of the paper. Then, have the child glue the pink circle slightly below the edge of the blue construction paper and place the ice cream cone just below the circle. And there you have your ice cream! Wasn’t that super duper easy?

Finally, be flexible and have the child decorate the ice cream to their liking with any materials you have provided such as tissue papers, stickers, glitter and so on.

Enjoy your day with a sweet ice cream.
