Use this horse to help your students learn about the letter H! Horse crafts will fit right into a Farm Animals theme and help make your life one day easier. It can also be used as a puppet when you sing “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” to help them understand the sounds horses make!

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this horse applies these skills:

Math

Add in math concepts by having your child count how many legs are on a horse , or having them count how many strings of yarn they use for the horse’s tail.

Science

If you have other crafts with your child, have them classify the horse along with the other crafts. For example, horses fall under animals, where spiders are classified as insects.

Fine Motor Skills

Your child will learn how to use scissors to cut the horse’s tail

Your child will use their pincer grasp to put the yarn together to create the tail. If you use googly eyes or sticker eyes, this will also allow them to improve their pincer grasp skills.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Children can use this horse as part of their farm and pretend to be a horse and make horse noises.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

You will use brown construction paper, markers, any colored yarn, scissors, and glue and/or tape.

Steps

Firstly, find yourself a nice horse template. We created a Cricut template for our horse in the shape of the letter H, which can be found through Pinterest.

Once you have your horse template, the child will first draw eyes and mouth on the horse’s head. You can also use googly eyes or stickers instead of drawing them.

Depending on the child’s cutting skills, have your child cut about three to five pieces of yarn. Each string of yarn should be about five inches long, which you can trim later. If the child does not have the necessary cutting skills, either guide them or cut the yarn for them.

Then have the child tape the end of the strings of yarn together to create the tail.

Now, at the bottom of the H, have your child use a marker to draw in the horse’s hooves.

Lastly, have the child tape or glue the tail onto the top of the H. I personally use tape because it seems to work better with yarn than glue does.

Modifications

You can use googly eyes or sticker eyes instead of having the child draw them.

You can replace yarn with strings or balloon ribbon.

Be creative and add some eyelashes to your horse!
