Crafts for Kids: D is for Dinosaur!

Here is a craft that kids can turn into a dinosaur and help teach the letter D. Lots of kids enjoy crafting and pretending to be dinosaurs. You can use this as a puppet for the song: “We Are The Dinosaur,” by Laurie Berkner.

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this sheep applies these skills:

Math

Have the child identify the shapes he sees on the dinosaur. 

Have the child count how many triangles he used.

Science

According to science, dinosaurs exist. They are classified under reptiles and would be a great shock to the child. You would think dinosaurs are mammals. Unfortunately, they are not! You can show pictures of the different types of dinosaurs and talk about how they existed a long time ago.

Fine Motor Skills

Firstly, children will work on cutting skills by cutting out shapes and the letter d.

Additionally, children will improve pincer grasp by using thumb and fingers to pick up triangles and circle to glue on the letter D. 

Last, but not least, children will improve skills of holding a a writing utensil to make eyes, mouth, and nose.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Children can use this dinosaur as a puppet during the “We Are The Dinosaur,” by Laurie Berkner.

Children can pretend to be dinosaur and enjoy interacting with each other.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

The following materials are required: orange and green construction paper, writing utensil, letter d template, markers, glue, and scissors.

Steps

First, have the child trace the letter d template onto the green construction paper. With an adult supervision, have the child use a scissor to cut the letter d with prompt to increase the cutting skill. 

Next, draw triangles onto the orange construction paper and have the child use a scissor to cut out the triangles. You need at least 8 triangles for one dinosaur.

Then. draw an oval to for the head and have the child use a scissor to cut it out. 

Then, have the child use glue to glue the orange triangles on the letter d. Guide the child if necessary. Glue the oval on top of the letter d to make the head. 

Lastly, have the child use a marker and draw the eyes, nose, and mouth on the oval.

Modifications

Make the dinosaurs unique by using different colors and different materials. For example, googly eyes, tissue papers, shapes foam for the triangle, etc.
