C is for cantaloupe!! Use super easy cantaloupe crafts to teach your kids the letter C! It is fun to see your child turn a paper plate into a letter C and then a fruit that most of us enjoy. Cantaloupes fall under a Fruits and Veggies theme and are very healthy. Don’t forget to sing some cantaloupe songs while your kids are crafting!

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this cantaloupe applies these skills:

Math

There is not much math, but you can have your child count away as he/she is decorating the cantaloupe. Identify the colors: orange and green.

Science

Ask the student if cantaloupe is a fruit or vegetable. Where does it grow? What does it need for it to grow? Label the parts of the cantaloupe: skin, rind, seeds, and flesh. This is a great way to introduce new vocabulary to young students. Imagine your child labeling and teaching you parts of a cantaloupe. Isn’t that surprising or what?

Fine Motor Skills

With the tissue paper, the child will use their pincer grasp to crumble it into small pieces.

Using their cutting skills, your child will cut out the letter C from the given plate. You can help by drawing a line showing where to cut.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Your child can pretend to enjoy the cantaloupe and tell you how it tastes; if it is sweet, sour, bitter, delicious, and so on. You can talk about the texture. The skin is rough and the flesh is soft. Just be careful your child does not have too much fun!

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

You will need the following items: a small paper plate, orange construction paper, markers, and glue.

Orange tissue paper and a paper plate
Scissors, pencil, glue, markers, and do-a-dot markers

Steps

With the tissue paper, the child will use their pincer grasp to crumble it into small pieces.

Using their cutting skills, your child will cut out the letter C from the given plate. You can help by drawing a line showing where to cut.

Your child will use a green crayon or marker to color the outer part of the letter C for the skin.

Using the orange tissue paper, glue it on the area that is not green.

Let it completely dry and there go your cantaloupe ready to be shared and displayed for others to see.

Modifications

You can have the child use construction paper instead of tissue papers.

You can also have the child color, paint the cantaloupe with a paintbrush, their fingers, or sponges to create different effects. This will give the child an opportunity to explore sensory skills.
