Turkeys make great crafts to get kids acquainted with the Fall and Thanksgiving. Use this craft to teach your kids how cute turkeys can be! They will learn how birds can have feathers and still not know how to fly. Don’t forget to play some Thanksgiving songs while your kids are crafting away!

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this craft applies these skills:

Math

Add in math concepts by having your child count and identify the colors of feathers they are using to decorate their turkey. Have your child count how many feathers they used.altogether.

Fine Motor Skills

Your child will learn how to use their fine motor skills to pick up the delicate feathers and glue it on the turkey. They will be using crayons to color their turkeys. Not only that, picking up the googly eyes and beak will improve their skills working with small items.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Imagine the children pretending to be turkeys gobbling away from you. Ask the children how they would feel if they were turkeys and someone wants to eat them.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using small items, scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

You will need the following items: colorful feathers, googly eyes, white and orange construction paper, crayons, markers, scissors, and glue

Orange construction paper, feathers, googly eyes, and a bowling ball template
Scissors, markers, pencil, and glue

Steps

Firstly, find a bowling ball template use as the body and trace it. Depending on the child’s cutting skills, have them cut it or you can cut it for them.

Have the child use crayons to color the turkey’s body.

Then, have the child glue the googly eyes, beak, and feathers on the turkey’s body. Just remember to glue the feathers on the back of the turkey’s body.

Finish off the craft by having your child glue the turkey’s legs. Let’s see how many legs the child wants to be use!

Modifications

Have the child choose the color of the construction paper and trace the turkey template on the chosen color. You can paint or use the Do-a-Dot markers to color the turkey’s template.

Improve the fine motor skills and have the child draw the eyes and beak on the turkey!

Instead of using feathers, make your own feathers by finding a feather template and trace it on different colors of construction paper.
