Let’s get crafty! Having your kids turn themselves into crafts is a great way to teach them self reflection and have them show us who they really are! It’s also a great way to show them that there is no problem being whatever they want to be. Exercising some creativity is always a good thing, so encourage them and craft along with them! Show them who you are too! Don’t forget to play some positive music to build up your kids while they craft themselves!
Skills
Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this craft applies these skills:
Math
Add in math concepts by having your child identify the colors and shapes they are using to decorate themselves. Have them count the items used for the craft.
Science
Use this moment to help your kids identify different parts of their body by pointing at it on their craft, and have them point at their matching body part.
Fine Motor Skills
Your child will learn how to use their fingers to hold the crayons to decorate the clothes and draw facial features on the body template. They will glue the clothes on the template. Using the yarn, your child will glue on the yarn as the hair.
Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional
Use this craft to be your child’s friend and give it a name. Or you can use it as a “puppet” during reading or play time.
Boundaries
Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.
Materials
You will use white construction paper for the template and any color you choose for the clothes: shirt, pant, skirt., yarn, sticker eyes, crayons, markers, scissors, and glue.
Glitter, markers, pencil, crayons, glue, and scissors
Steps
Firstly, find a body templates that you wish to use with your craft.
Next, trace the body template on white construction paper and cut out it out.
Then, make a shirt, pants, and skirt template that fits your body template. Don’t forget to make shoes for it too. Trace it on different colored construction paper and cut it out.
Have the child put the eyes sticker on the face and draw in the nose and mouth.
Depending on the child’s preference, glue the shirt, pants or skirt on the template.
Finally, cut out some yarn and glue it on the top of the body template’s head and put aside to dry! And you are done.
Optionally, have the child draw items or decorate the shirt, pants, or skirt that they would want to wear to identify who they are.
Modifications
There is so much you can do to modify this craft. Do anything you prefer to make this activity enjoyable. For example, use googly eyes or draw in the eyes instead of sticker eyes. Draw in the shirt, pants, skirt, or shoes instead of pre-cut clothes. Have the child hold flowers in one hand.
Make it unique and create yourself.
