A is for apple, what can you say! Use super simple apple crafts like this one to teach your kids the first letter of the alphabet! It is fun and enjoyable to see what color your child wants their apple to be. Apple falls under a Fruits and Veggies theme and is very healthy.

Did you know apples are the first item sung in the Phonics Song?

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this sheep applies these skills:

Math

There is not much math, but you can have your child draw in seeds. Afterwards, you can ask how many seeds are there altogether.

Science

Ask the student if apple is a fruit or vegetable. Label the parts of an apple: stem, leaves, core, skin, seeds, and flesh. This is a great way to introduce new vocabulary to young students. Imagine your child labeling and teaching you parts of an apple. Isn’t that surprising or what?

Fine Motor Skills

With the yarn, the child will use their hand eye coordination and concentrate to shape the yarn into the letter A on the apple

Your child will focus and do their best to make sure the yarn matches the letter A.

Using their cutting skills, your child will cut out the apple with your supervision. Challenge your child to cut out the stem and the leaves. If not, do it for them. You don’t want your child to be frustrated and give up!

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Your child can pretend to eat the apple and tell you how it tastes; if it is sweet, sour, bitter, delicious, and so on. Just be careful your child does not take a bite of the apple or you’ll be shocked.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

You will need the following items: an apple template, red, black, and green construction paper, yarn, marker, and glue

Steps

Depending on the child’s fine motor skills, have the child trace the apple template onto a red construction paper and cut it out.

Draw a leaf on a green construction and have the child cut it out. Again, if the child does not have the cutting skills, you can prompt or do it for the child.

Cut out a thin black strip of construction paper to make the stem.

Don’t forget to use the marker to write a capital A and a lower case a on the apple. This will be a visual guide for the child to use the yarn and turn it into an the letter on the apple.

With your guidance, have the child cut approximately two to three pieces of yarn about 2 inches long.

Have the child glue the stem and the leaf on the back of the apple without the letter.

Lastly, have the child use the yarn and glue it on the letters “A” and “a”. This is a little tricky and requires concentration. Motivate the child so they do not give up. They can do it, yes they can! Keep it up!

Modifications

If using a yarn is too challenging for the child, have the child trace the letters with a marker, color pencil, or crayons.

Instead of having the letter in the middle of the apple, trace the apple template onto a white construction paper and have the child decorate it with tissue papers, markers, color pencils, and/or crayons.

You can also have the child paint the apple with a paintbrush, their fingers, or sponges to create a different effects. This will give the child an opportunity to explore sensory skills.
