Crafts for Kids: O is for Octopus!

Use this craft that kids can turn into an octopus to help your them learn about the letter O! Octopus crafts will fit right into an Ocean Animal. It can also be used as a puppet when you sing the “Slippery Fish” song to help them understand how an octopus may move.

Skills

Types of skills can include math, science, fine motor, dramatic play, social and emotional. Here is how this sheep applies these skills:

Math

Add in math concepts by having your child count how many legs are on a octopus.

Ask what shapes do the child see on the octopus. 

Have the child identify the colors on the octopus.

Science

You can utilize this octopus by having the child classify and sort out octopus according to their habitat from other animals.

Fine Motor Skills

Children will trace the letter O template with a writing utensil provided.

The children will also use a scissor to cut out the letter O and rectangles for the octopus’s legs.

Additionally, your child will use a writing utensil to trace the O template and rectangles to increase the cutting skills.

Lastly, children will use work on hands strengths to fold the rectangles to create the octopus’s legs to have a 3-d effect.

Dramatic Play and Social/Emotional

Children can use this  horse as part of their farm and pretend to be a horse and make  horse noises.

Boundaries

Make sure you supervise your child when using scissors and other sharp items.

Materials

For this crafts you will need:

letter o template
pink, yellow, green, purple, red, orange, and blue construction papers

  • stickers eyes
  • markers
  • pencils
  • glue
  • scissors

Steps

Firstly, gather and prepare your materials in one places for quick and easy access.

Next, have the child trace the o template onto the pink construction paper and use a scissor to cut it out. (Please supervise the child at all time and guide as necessary).

Then, draw straight lines on the construction paper about 1/4 inch wide and allow the student to use a scissor to cut one the line for the legs. (Do this for each color of construction paper and there should be a total of 8 legs).

Guide the child to fold each of the legs back and forth like a folding fan and glue on the letter O.

Lastly, flip it over and have the child peel off the eye stickers and stick it to the top of the letter O. On the bottom of the letter O just above the legs, ask the child to draw a mouth on the octopus.

Modifications

You can use googly eyes or have the child draw it instead of sicker eyes.

Next, you can use thick yarn instead of construction paper to create the octopus legs.

Finally, you can make the octopus and octopus’s legs any colors.

Decorate the octopus with stickers, glitter, tissue papers, markers, pom poms, etc. to your liking!
